Some of the factors that will influence
your choice when specifying or selecting castors for Trucks,
Trolleys and Trailers.
Capacity
What will the maximum load be? Don't
forget the weight of the truck. Does the possibility of
overload, shock loading, abuse or poor floors call for a
safety factor?
Rollability
If loads are to be
pushed manually, think of the man! Select
the largest practical wheel diameter,
anti-friction bearings, and the kind of
wheel that will start and roll easiest over
the surface in question. On smooth floors,
the harder the tread, the easier it will
roll, so particular attention should be paid
to rollability in the case of soft rubber-tyred
wheels.
Floor Conditions
Are they smooth? Must
elevator sills or dock plates be traversed?
Are there chips or threads or harmful
substances on the floor?
Operating Environment
Is noise a factor?
Water, oil, grease, chemicals or temperature
extremes present? Special lubricants can be
provideed or perhaps special bearings are
called for.
Other Factors
Shock load conditions.
Fragile or awkwardly shaped products.
Non-marking wheels, anti-static wheels.
Manually propelled or power towed. Internal
use or over public roadways. Load stability.
Presence of water, oil, acids, alkalines,
swarfs and threads. High or low
temperatures. Construction materials and
type of finish: hygiene quality, industrial,
commercial.
